London Trans Pride Portraits: Our existence is resistance  

London Trans+ Pride Portraits: Our Existence is Resistance is an ongoing portrait project documenting the people who make up London Trans+ Pride. The project began in 2023, when I attended Trans+ Pride for the first time and brought my Yashica TLR film camera with me. Wanting to capture the day differently from typical event photography, I began making portraits of people I met at Trans Pride.

Working with a medium format film camera created a slower and more intentional process. The time required to compose each image and the curiosity people had towards the camera often created a moment of connection between myself and the person being photographed. What started as individual portraits of strangers gradually became an ongoing body of work, with familiar faces returning each year and new stories becoming part of the project.

Since 2023, I have continued returning to Trans+ Pride, now photographing with a Mamiya RB67 medium format camera. Through these portraits, the project explores visibility, identity, and the importance of creating space for trans and non-binary people to be represented on their own terms.

Our Existence is Resistance is not only a record of a moment, but an evolving portrait archive of the queer community.
